Syrah Denis Mercier & Simon Maye – Double vertical (2000s – 2010s)
Discover the distinct expressions of Valais Syrah through a double-vertical tasting covering almost 20 years of winemaking history.
This gathering focuses on how specific vineyard origins, estate histories, and technical precision have shaped two of Switzerland’s most iconic red cuvées.
By tasting these back vintages, often side-by-side, we will explore how climatic evolution, generational transitions within the estates and changes in trends have influenced the style of such wines.
Domaine Denis Mercier (Sierre)
Founded in 1982, Denis Mercier built this family estate with a focus on strict quality and meticulous craftsmanship. Since 2013, his daughter, Madeleine Mercier, has joined and co-managed the cellar, blending traditional practices with modern technical insights across their 8 hectares.
The Cuvée
The grapes originate mostly from Pradec plots, a steeply terraced vineyard located directly above the Sierre city center next to Château Mercier. The soil here is calcareous in nature, deep, dry, and exceptionally rocky.
Simon Maye & Fils (Chamoson)
Established in 1948, Simon Maye famously abandoned law school to launch his first harvest, pioneering strict yield controls and precise rootstock selection when they were still uncommon. Today, Raphaël Maye manage the 10-hectare estate, which is fully certified in organic farming (BioSuisse).
The Cuvée
This flagship cuvée is sourced exclusively from old vines (some over 60 years old) located on the celebrated « Prés-des-Pierres » lieu-dit. Situated on the alluvial cone of Chamoson, the soil is highly distinctive: a very gravelly limestone matrix mixed with sand and silt.
